Every year for ten days, the session of the CSW provides an opportunity to review progress towards gender equality and the empowerment of women, identify challenges, set global standards and norms and formulate policies to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. In every session, the Commission will agree on a principal outcome on the sessions priority theme, which is short, succinct and identified the gaps and challenges in the implementation of previous commitment to accelerate women's rights and gender equality initiatives.
Who is part of it?
The Commission was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946 to prepare recommendations on promoting women’s rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields. Every year, in consultative status with ECOSOC, representatives of Member States, United Nations entities and non-governmental organisations gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York for the Commission’s annual session.
